Hola todos! I’m Rachel and I will be the English Conversation Assistant at La Arboleda this year! I grew up in the countryside of western Pennsylvania. This area is very rural with many farms and forests. However, I moved to New York City to attend Wagner College. I graduated this spring with a Bachelor of Arts degree. I majored in English and anthropology and minored in Spanish. I love to spend time with friends, explore New York City, visit museums, and learn about history, culture and gender studies. I am interested in archaeology and spent two summers working as a team supervisor at an archaeological excavation near Cuzco, Peru. I also love to travel but this is my first time in Spain! I am very excited to explore Spain, get to know the culture, and improve my Spanish speaking skills. I am also really excited to meet everyone at La Arboleda and get started with this school year!

Window to the world: Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh is a medium-sized city with about 305, 700 inhabitants. One of the most interesting things about Pittsburgh is its geographical location. Pittsburgh is in western Pennsylvania near the Appalachian Mountains. The city is located at the point at which 3 rivers connect. Pittsburgh is called the “City of Bridges” because the greater Pittsburgh area has got over 2000 bridges. Because of the rivers and bridges, Pittsburgh is a very beautiful place. Many films are made in Pittsburgh because it is beautiful and cheap. For example, “Perks of Being a Wallflower,” “Jack Reacher,” “Inspector Gadget” and the new “Batman” are all popular films made in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh has a very interesting history. During the 19th century, Pittsburgh was one of the most important industrial cities in the world. It mass-produced steel and so is sometimes called the “Steel City.” Unfortunately, during this time Pittsburgh was also one of the most polluted cities in the United States. Now, Pittsburgh is a clean city. In fact, the Economist Intelligence Unit voted Pittsburgh the “Most Livable City” in America in 2011. It was voted this because it is not expensive, it is not croweded, it has a lively cultural scene and has various universities. Pittsburgh is known for being the home of the internationally famous Heinz Ketchup company and for a restaurant called Pirmanti Brothers. This restaurant is famous because it serves french fries inside of its big sandwiches. Primanti Brothers has been featured on TV on The Food Network. Music and art are very important to Pittsburgh. The pop artist Andy Warhol and the rapper Wiz Khalifa are both from Pittsburgh. In the city, people can eat at the many restaurants and cafes, go to concerts, and enjoy the art. The people of Pittsburgh are very passionate about their three major sports teams. These teams are the Pittsburgh Steelers (American football), the Pittsburgh Penguins (hockey) and the Pittsburgh Pirates (baseball). The Pittsburgh Steelers have won more Superbowl championships than any other American football team. The weather in Pittsburgh changes a lot thoughout the year. In the summer it is very hot and humid, in the autumn it is chilly and all of the leaves on the trees change colors, the the winter it is very cold with lots of snow and in the spring it is warm and there are many flowers.
